33rd Friday in Ordinary Time
Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
21 November 2025
Holiness Begins in the Hidden Places
Today the Church celebrates a quiet, beautiful feast
— the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It’s not a feast centered on a dramatic moment like the Annunciation or the Visitation.
It’s not filled with miracles, angels, or prophetic declarations. Instead,
it is a feast rooted in something hidden, humble, and simple:
the offering of a young girl’s life entirely to God.
And that’s exactly what this feast teaches us
— that God often begins His greatest works in the hidden places,
long before the world takes notice.
According to ancient Christian tradition, Mary’s parents,
Joachim and Anne,
brought her to the Temple when she was still a little girl,
offering her entirely to the Lord.
Scripture doesn’t narrate this moment,
but the earliest generations of Christians preserved the memory because it reveals something essential about Mary’s vocation:
her whole life
— from the very beginning —
was for God.
Before she carried Christ in her womb…
Before she uttered her great yes to the angel…
Before she stood at the foot of the Cross…
Mary’s heart already belonged completely to the Lord.
And that is what we celebrate today:
Mary’s readiness,
formed not in public miracles
but in the quiet shaping of grace, obedience, and prayer.
This feast teaches us something crucial about our own lives of faith:
Holiness rarely begins with big, dramatic moments.
Holiness begins where no one sees
— in the Temple of the heart.
For Mary, holiness began in:
her quiet listening to God
her silent trust
her early love for Scripture
her readiness to give herself entirely
For us, it begins in just the same way:
in the hidden decisions…
in the small sacrifices…
in the unseen acts of love…
in the ordinary moments of daily faithfulness.
God prepares our “yes” long before He asks for it.
This is why the Church gives us this feast
— to remind us that God is often doing His greatest work long before we understand it
or are aware of it
and usually before anyone else can see it.
The Presentation of Mary is a feast of offering.
Mary was offered to God
— completely, joyfully, trustingly.
And she invites us to do the same.
We present ourselves to God every time we:
begin our day with prayer
turn away from sin
forgive someone who hurt us
offer our suffering with trust
love those we find hard to love
make time for silence with God
surrender our plans to His will
Like Mary, we don’t always see what God is preparing.
We don’t always understand how He is shaping us.
But the hidden part of discipleship
— the daily offering of ourselves —
is how God forms saints.
There’s something else at work in this feast.
Mary’s presentation points forward to the presentation of Christ Himself.
She,
the Temple of the Living God,
is brought into the earthly Temple
— so that one day
the true Temple, Jesus Christ,
would come into the world through her.
Her early offering becomes the pattern of her entire life
— and it becomes the pattern for ours.
Today’s feast asks us a simple but powerful question:
What part of my life have I not yet presented to God?
My fears?
My sins?
My time?
My future?
My wounds?
My plans?
My family?
My weaknesses?
My vocation?
My habits?
My heart?
God formed Mary quietly, humbly, and hiddenly
— and through her,
He brought salvation to the world.
Imagine what He can do with us when we allow Him to work in the hidden places too.
So today, let us join Mary in the Temple,
offering ourselves to God,
trusting that He is shaping a holy story in our lives —
even if right now, it is still hidden.
Mother Mary, presented wholly to God,
teach us to give our lives to Him without reserve.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
